Evidence suggets that the pond is man-made, built by daming up a spur of Dry Run Creek. Although the date is not known, it was certainly in place when the ice house was built, around 1850. It is possible that it was built earlier, given the need for drinking water for animals pastured along the creek, whose name - which appears on maps as early as 1840 - suggests that water wasn't always present. Today the creek runs true to form: dry thoughout much of the year. As in the past, the pond provides a source of ice in the winter that is harvested and stored in the ice house next to the pond. |
