The Charles Fish Family and Farm "Snapshots" of
the Charles Fish Family and Farm

In the 1870 US Census the family is aging and Charles is indicated as head of household and sole owner. The farm is still jointly owned, however. Again, the pattern of one male and one female young person as live-in help is present. The location of the farm is indicated on the 1875 Combination Atlas Map of Mercer County.
Young Joseph Fish is now married and living on his own farm in Hopewell. On March 14, 1867 he married Mary E. Lord in Lawrence Township. In 1870 he was 28 years old and he and Mary had a four month old son named Charles. Living in his household were several other people listed as housekeeper or laborer - or without designation. The agricultural schedule shows Joseph with a 98 acre farm worth $9,000. This farm was located just east of Harbourton and was purchased by Charles Fish in 1869 and then sold in 1876. Charles evidently purchased it for Joseph and then sold it when Joseph and his family moved out of the area. The farm is labeled as owned by Charles Fish on the 1875 Combined Atlas Map of Mercer County.
In 1870 Charles and Margaret Fish also owned a small 28 acre farm in Pennington Borough at what is now 65 South Main Street. It was purchased in two parcels on March 31 and April 1, 1865. The aging Andrew did not participate in the purchase. Perhaps the plan was to rent out the small farm while they continued to live on the larger farm until Andrew's death. In fact, about five years after Andrew's death they did sell the larger farm and moved to the Pennington farm where they lived out their lives.
